23RD OF FEBRUARY
AN ATTEMPT OF A COUP D' ETAT FAILED

INTRODUCTION

A curious 23rd day happened an unforgettable event in the history of Spain , there was a coup d´etat attempt but this attempt was unsuccessful . In 1981, this coup was led by a few military leaders , the most characteristic and the most important part was the assault on the Congress of the Deputies by a group of civil guards led by the civil guard´s colonel  Antonio Tejero. This happened during the voting session for the investiture of the candidate for Prime Minister, Leopoldo Calvo -Sotelo , UCD.


HOW IT HAPPENED

At the coup d´etat of the day 23rd, the different members of the military coup operated since the beginning of the step called “Transición”, through a coordinated action. At six o’clock of the evening started the votation for Leopoldo Calvo –Sotelo as the new Prime Minister of Spain . At 18:22 pm, when he went to give his vote the Socialist deputy Manuel Núñez Encabo , the plan called “ Duque de Ahumada “ , referring to the founder of the Civil Guard. According to the plan , a group of policemen, guns in their hands, inturrepted the Congress of the Deputies led by the Colonel Antonio Tejero. Tejero wented to the podium and shouted “Todo el mundo quieto!“ and ordered everyone to drop to the ground.
As highest ranking military there and present as Deputy Vice-president of the government, the General Gutiérrez Mellado rose , went to the Colonel Tejero and ordered him to sign and give him the gun. After a brief struggle and to reaffirm its order, Tejero fired a shot that was followed by several guns of the assailants. The old general remained indifferent to the sound of the guns . While most of the deputies obeyed Tejero´s orders. The Deputy President Suarez Carrillo remained sitting in his seat. Suarez even move to help Gutiérrez Mellado. During the assault, one of the deputies suffered an anxiety attack and a hit in his nose.


SOME IMPORTANT INFORMATION

The first signs of unrest in the army appeared in April 1977, when because of the legalization of the PCE, the 9th  of that month, Holy Saturday, dimited the admiral Pita da Veiga , Minister of Marine , and the Superior Council of army issued a statement in which it expressed its disagreement with such legalization , although it happened. In November 1978 the dismantling of the “Operación Galaxy”, an attempted of a military coup by which their primary responsibility, Antonio Tejero, was sentenced to seven months in prison.
